About This Course
Risk management and compliance are often treated as functions that belong to a specialist department. In practice both depend on decisions made daily across the whole institution. This course sets out how risk management works inside a financial institution and what every member of staff contributes to it.
The course begins by defining risk management in a financial-institution context and identifying the characteristics that distinguish effective programmes from paper exercises. It covers the principal risk categories, the tools used to identify and assess exposure, and the control measures applied to reduce it - along with the concepts of risk tolerance and risk appetite that determine how much exposure an institution is willing to carry.
Attention then turns to compliance programmes: what a regulator expects to see, how compliance and risk functions relate to one another, and how both integrate with day-to-day business operations rather than sitting alongside them. A dedicated module addresses escalation - how risks are communicated upward, what triggers a regulatory report, and the documentation that must support it.
The final module examines culture and individual accountability: how a risk-aware culture is built, what it looks like in practice, and why tone from senior management determines whether controls function or are quietly worked around.
Learners complete the course able to identify risks arising in their own role, apply the relevant controls, and escalate appropriately when something falls outside tolerance.
