Conflicts of interest are among the most common sources of regulatory breach in capital markets, and they rarely announce themselves. They emerge quietly - through a personal shareholding, a family relationship, an outside directorship, or a gift from a counterparty. This course equips staff at Ethiopian capital market service providers to recognise those situations early and handle them properly.

The course opens with a working definition of what a conflict of interest actually is, then examines the four types most often encountered in practice: financial conflicts, relationship conflicts, competing-interest conflicts, and organisational conflicts. Each is illustrated with a dramatised scenario drawn from realistic Ethiopian market situations, followed by a narrator's analysis explaining what went wrong and what should have happened instead.

From there the focus shifts to obligation. Learners work through the regulatory duties imposed by Article 167, the disclosure requirements that follow, and the practical strategies firms use to manage conflicts once identified - avoidance, disclosure, information barriers, and recusal. The final module covers the reporting channels available to staff and the legal protections afforded to those who raise concerns in good faith.

By the end, learners should be able to identify a conflict before it becomes a breach, understand precisely what the regulation requires of them personally, and know how to escalate a concern through the right channel.
